My Friend's Not Okay

You don't need perfect words. Showing up is already a big deal — to them and to us.

How to start the conversation

1

Pick a private moment

Somewhere quiet, just the two of you. Never in front of a group.

2

Open with what you noticed

"You have seemed down lately — are you okay?" Beats "What's wrong with you?"

3

Listen more than you talk

Do not rush to fix. Just let them talk. Silence is okay.

4

Do not promise secrecy

If they are in real danger, you may need to tell an adult. Say so kindly, up front.

5

Help them take one next step

A check in here, a trusted adult, or urgent help if it is serious.

Want backup from MindCare?

Tell us what you've noticed. A MindCare support person will reply to you here, usually within one working day — never directly to your friend. If your friend might be in danger right now, don't wait for us: tell a trusted adult and call 991 (police), 992 (ambulance) or ChildLine on 116 (free).
